Accommodations
Feel
the Japanese Style
Many
different styles of accommodations may be found in Beppu, ranging
from traditional onsen ryokan (Japanese-style inns with hot spring
facilities), convenient hotels, hot spring resort inns that offer
reasonably priced packages for extended stays, to top-of-the-class
exclusive inns. Depending on the occasion and your needs, there
are many ways to enjoy your stay.
Onsen ryokan (Japanese-style inns
with hot spring facilities)
The most typical packages come with an overnight stay, dinner and breakfast.
However, there has been an increasing trend of providing only accommodations,
while breakfast and dinner are optional. The rooms are usually Japanese-style
tatami rooms although there are more Japanese-style tatami rooms with beds
and Western-style rooms than before. The charges for an overnight stay with
two meals range from 10,000 yen to 20,000 yen per person and vary by the facilities
provided, day of the week, and season of the year. The year-end and New Year
holidays, Golden Week holidays at the beginning of May, and summer holidays
are peak seasons in Japan. Most ryokan reject single guests since their business
packages often cater to more than 2 to 4 people. If you are traveling alone,
it may be wiser to stay in Japanese ‘businesses hotels’ (budget hotels) or
ryokan that are open to foreign tourists.
Hotels
Around Beppu station, the number of modern hotels with mainly western-style
rooms has increased. Many hotels have hot spring bath facilities, so you can
enjoy the convenience of a western-style room and luxuriate in a Japanese hot
spring at the same time. These hotels are also open to those who are traveling
alone or on business.
Hot spring resort inns (Toji-Yado)
Hot spring resort inns come in the ryokan style and are suitable for extended
stays. In Beppu Hatto, they are dotted around the Kannawa Hot Springs area.
These inns typically offer a Japanese-style room and an overnight stay without
meals and are very affordable. Prices range from 3,000 yen to 5,000 yen per
night. Many hot spring resort inns in the Kannawa Hot Springs area come with
a cooking facility called ‘Jigoku-mushi gama’ - these are steamers that make
use of hot spring steam. You may use the facility to make your own meals during
your stay. Many of the hot spring resort inns are operated by the elderly who
are unable to communicate with foreign guests, but it will be a new and interesting
experience for those who hanker after a challenge.
